Existence of Dismissal: Obstetric Fistula in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has one of the highest maternal death rates in the world. This project presents the surgical and counseling work being done at Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, and its branch facilities throughout Ethiopia,in an effort to capture the internal and psychological injuries many
women sustained while giving birth.

Addis Ababa Fisula Hospital is founded by two gynecologists from Australia in 1974 - Dr. Catherine Hamlin and her husband - Dr. Reginald Hamlin. The patients of the hospital are women with childbirth injuries. The injured women suffer in silence for years.

Hey Yanina – This is a great collection of compelling images highlighting an important story. You’ve got a knack for making pictures that are very beautiful in a traditional way. Like Jamie I noticed the similarities between this and Mary Calvert’s story, but still think that it is an issue that needs to be shown – though hopefully interpreted in different ways. You have a great sense of the traditional photojournalism aesthetic, my only criticism would be that I don’t feel it pushes the envelope to challenge or startle me visually. To make your voice heard, and by proxy that of your subjects, you need to strive to cultivate your own unique perspective.

Yanina and I have known each other for sometime. This essay is beautiful and heart wrenching. However, I'm a little disturbed by how incredibly similar it is to the story Mary Calvert photographed for her award winning essay on fistula. Would you care to comment on that?

The composition is beautiful, the subjects are well presented and I didn't need to read the essay description to know what it was about. You did a great job on a tough subject and I truly wish more students were as outgoing and risky like you when tackling a photo story subject. Women's issues in this part of the world are rarely reported on and bravo for going there and doing the needful for a story that is under reported in today's media.

Yes, I have noticed similarities too- the same country, the same city, the same hospital, the same surgeries, the same dresses, the same activities within the hospital, the same hopes, etc.

This hospital is a very interesting place, it had a heavy impact upon my "seeing" the world. Your photograph continues that for me....keep going with it.

I love the image with the sheets hanging and the woman standing far away. I feel distanced from her as though she is ashamed. Did you want this to be one of the last images?

Wrong sequence, loose edit... all over the place....My oh my..
