    Pip, It’s been great to see this project develop. Your vision is strong and compelling. Despite this story being a bit “over-covered” by the media, I think it is important to interpret it in your own way. We’ve discussed the project in depth before and I am excited to see how it develops as you keep working on it.

    Phillip, this is a really nice, really tightly edited photo essay. I enjoy the black and white but honestly think this might have shined in color too. The visual variety is clean and sharp. The flow of images is very well presented. Your editing on this is really tight and really well done. You might want to expand a bit on the description though. That's the "journalism" part of photojournalism that most people forget about when doing proposals and story descriptions. Gimme some new stats that show you actually know what's going on there.

    My only negative critique would be that is seems redundant to other types of stories I've seen on this same topic. Which might make you ask (should you choose to continue it for a longer time): what is the future of the border? what about the fence? is there a political side you could look into? what about the other side of the border and their patrols? Or even the commerce that is associated with border crossers? Maybe looking into the good Samaritans who post water stops around the way or the protestors on both sides who rally to stop crossings/patrols? Sam Stewart did a really cool story on this years ago and he might have some advice for mixing it up.

    Basically, this is a great story for a student contest and I'm not overloaded with extraneous images. Nice job, man!

    Initial reaction, great photographs. You don't give us to much. (good thing) I have seen a lot of stories where the photographer gets so caught up in the story they forget how to make interesting pictures. I like this essay because each image holds its own. Well done.

    Great work.
    I agree with Panos, this is a really well-done piece, but it's tough because I've seen several on the same subject. Then again, there are always going to be lots of stories about prominent issues done over and over, and every once in a while there's a different way of seeing it, like in this case.

    Is this a "cliche" story? Yes it is...
    Did you do a great job here ????
    YES YOU DID.... great "opener" shot.... you got close...
    I also see here a great PJ/newspaper career...
