Description of Essay as provided by photographer:

A Maine Metal Detecting community meets at Sebago Lake to talk about what they have found, and compare gear. Then they go off on their own, listening to the ground.  The hobby has become more popular with the recession. “Everybody likes treasure hunting.”

Natalie – This is an interesting daily assignment that might yield a couple fun singles, but not enough to make into a story or essay in my opinion. As a visual storyteller, one of the most difficult facets of your job sometime will be selecting something that is visually interesting. While this might make a fascinating written story there just isn’t enough to pull an essay out of what you shot. Some things just will not yield a picture story. Editing is one of the most key elements of photography – there are a lot of redundancies in the images you chose to show. Piece together a tight edit of the strongest images to present. I don’t get a sense of narrative from this collection of pictures – only that you were there with a camera. Figure out what you are trying to say with your images. If you are a communicator, you need a unique perspective. What is yours? I hope this is helpful and would love to chat with you more about your approach if you feel like it. Just drop me a line.

Thanks for all the feedback. But this piece is meant to be more of an audio piece. The photos aid the audio, but I agree, don't really work on their own.

You can listen to it here: http://www.natalieconnphotography.com/audio/metal/metaldetecting_slideshow.html

I tried to upload it to Vewd as an audio slideshow, but it seems that only the photos are here.?

This essay has potential but I feel like the photographer needed to delve a bit more into the subject matter. I don't really get a sense that a lot of time was spent finding out the personal lives of these treasure hunters, finding the most wild and unique members. There's a lot of portraits here which makes me suspect the photographer might have been getting bored with the subject matter. There are some nice detail shots in here and a few pretty light moments. But I think I'd like to see the photographer spend more time at this and really find me something with meat on it. Good luck!

Hi. Thank-you for the comment! You're right, I'm drawn to the stories about everyday people, especially the communities that they create. My story ideas are small but usually encompass broader issues like the economy, culture, happiness, passion, creativity-- What brings people together. The metal detecting story started like most of my ideas. I had seen people collecting on the beach before and was curious. Is that fun or compulsive? What do they find? Is it solitary or are there communities? I searched it online and found a forum for metal detecting Mainers. They were having a "group hunt" at a beach near me and they were open to me following them around with a camera and mic. I'm also an aspiring radio producer. I knew that the sound of the metal detector was important. I thought it might work well as a multimedia piece. Let me know what you think. I have the sound and photos on my website here: http://thesundaybest.net/stories/metaldetecting_slideshow.html

    Natalie, hi...
    Very interesting... simple ...
How did you come up with this idea?????
Everybody is trying hard to get into "dramatic" stories...
with lots of emotions and "manipulations"... but you are honest...
You can see the extraordinary into the most "ordinary" situations...
Your photography is also "simple" but right on the money...
Many newspapers would love to hire you...
Is photojournalism your "style of choice"??????
