Conversation about voting

After much discussion between judges, partipants and several Twitter friends, we have removed voting tools from this website. Panos brought this to my attention:

“the people that vote are photographers friends… biased opinions….

[they] shouldn’t be allowed to vote… it makes it American Idol-ish…”

We are not trying to foster American Idol style voting. All of these essays are amazing, they show some serious dedication and should not be looked at in that way.

So I decided to ask Nicole Tung how she felt about it; at the time of me asking her she had more than 30 votes and an almost 10 star rating. She replied:

“I have to be honest, it felt a little awkward asking for votes for the viewer’s choice– it did feel a little American Idol-ish, but in some ways I think it brings a lot of people to the Vewd site”

She agreed. It probably wasn’t the best idea Vewd has had. So we have removed it. Nicole made a good point though, it does bring people to the site who might not otherwise show up… and that was the goal we had with it. It worked, but we missed what it might create.

As it says in the right column, the essay with the most conversation will now win the People’s Choice. We don’t mean ask every person on the street to make a comment saying “good” or “pretty”. We hope some amazing ideas and conversation will be sparked here… stuff that will continue beyond this contest.

If you have any suggestions about this or think Vewd is Lucifer for taking about the voting or for thinking about it to begin with, let us know in the comments.
