Sponsored in part by Rotary International and staffed by volunteers, the medical mission unofficially nicknamed "Operation Footprint" occurs in January and takes over a wing of Hospital San Felipe in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Lured by radio announcements and local Peace Corps Volunteers, parents bring their children from cities and small villages all over this third world country in hopes of getting them free surgery by doctors from the United States.
Their children are afflicted by club foot and other orthopedic deformities which can make walking difficult, and sometimes impossible. Even if the parents could afford this medical care, these surgeries cannot currently be performed by Honduran doctors due to a lack of equipment and training.
I am a freelance documentary photographer constantly in search of a new story. I attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, ME where I learned about the Catholic church and harness racing, among other things. I'm currently living in Providence, RI with my cat, my cameras and an awesome roommate.
