Quantcast
Frequently Asked Questions

Question:

So, how does this all work?

Answer:

All photos you see on Vewd are contributed by photographers who have something to share in the realm of Documentary Photography. Our editors review hundreds of essays through a meticulous selection process and if they think your essay is up to snuff, we’ll stick on the site.

From the minute you submit something, you are a part of the Vewd Network. We want to see your work as you work on it, so submit your newest stuff. Keep us posted on where you are, how you’re doing, what you’re shooting and where you’re getting published. It is as exciting to us as it is to you!

Question:

Do I get paid?

Answer:

Of course! If we choose your work and feature it, we pass on to you a large portion of our advertising income. We wouldn’t be able to have a site without the advertisers and we couldn’t have it without you! Pay isn’t the best, but we like to think it beats giving your work away. We pay you depending on how many people look at your gallery. Our current rate is $2.50/1000 views - we pay via PayPal or a check monthly. There is a minimum balance of $35 for a PayPal payment and $50 for a check.

Question:

How can I share my gallery?

Answer:

We have built several tools into the website that allow you to easily share the work with your friends, stick it on your favorite social network profile, etc. If you’re more of an old fashioned type, we have worked with Zazzle to create a business card you can purchase with the Vewd logo and your gallery’s address for hand out-age.

Question:

Well, what sort of photography do you want?

Answer:

We are seeking (largely) unpublished, in-depth story-telling, documentary photography - things you have spent weeks, months, even years, shooting and editing. The photographs should be “truthful, objective, and candid” (Wikipedia, “Documentary Photography”). We only feature photographic essays (galleries, sideshows, series, etc.) and multimedia elements. We want you to tell us a story about something we likely know nothing about. Ever opened a National Geographic? That, for the most part, is what we’re looking for. We encourage you to include a concise description to help us, and viewers, understand your essay.

Question:

What is “largely unpublished”?

Answer:

If your photography has been published in a place that satisfies you, if it has reached the right audience, at the right time, and had the effect you intended it to have, we don’t want to republish it. If your work has been sitting on your personal site and only a handful of folks have seen it, send it to us, we will see if we can help you get your work out there.

Question:

I’m still not sure if my photographs are what you’re looking for…

Answer:

If you’re still unclear, here are some other guidelines:
- Would anyone outside of your family be interested in seeing them? If not, probably not the right place for them.
- Are you taking a fresh look at something, whether it’s a brand new or classic topic? Are you challenging current views and spreading a message not so heard of? Great. If it has a been there, done that feel; we’ll probably pass.
- Were most of the photos shot in a studio, basement, high school gym, or similar location? Probably not what were looking for, but it could be.

Question:

What about Copyrights and that legal stuff?

Answer:

Essentially, when you submit your photos to Vewd, you are giving us the option to license them for use on our website while you retain all rights and use – you’re just letting us borrow them. We will be happy to remove them for any reason (say when your new publisher gets uppity about having them here). All you need to do is send us a letter (yes, in the real mail). Shoot us an e-mail and tell us you sent it, we’ll take them down as soon as possible.

Question:

What exactly are you going to do with my photos?

Answer:

We will put them on the website in a gallery, like you see the others, with a bunch of contact information for you. Or we may be interested in producing a multimedia piece with your photos, with sound, and video (if you’ve got that). In special circumstances, like say, when your photos blow our minds, we may create a small printed piece for publicity with use of your image. It will help us grow and give you a chance to fend off those bill collectors for another day.

Question:

So I’m ready to submit something, but.. how exactly do I do that?

Answer:

Great! Head on over to the Registration page. You’ll need to submit a complete (or as complete as possible) application. Once inside the bowels of Vewd, you will be instructed on how to complete the submission, upload your photos, and get directly in touch with us.

Question:

Why can’t I just e-mail my photos to you or use FTP like other websites?

Answer:

Most of the other magazines use a very different payment system, usually paying an upfront price for your photos. Since we pay continually, we needed something that allows you to track your income, contact us directly, and manage your submission. It gives you a direct link to us and, more importantly, your money.

Question:

Can’t you just look at my website and see what you want?

Answer:

Although this could work, it gets too complicated to browse every individual website. We might never know what you would like us to be looking for, and of course, not all photographers have a website. Using our system levels the playing field and allows us to focus on the power of your photographs, instead of the navigation of your website.

Question:

How many of my photos will be used on the site?

Answer:

We evaluate the essay consisting of every image you submit to us. We understand how difficult it is for many photographers to edit and therefore often assist in the process once the photos arrive to us. We may use all of your photos, but it is likely we will edit some out.
